May 2022... News, Events and What We are Reading
Teach Your Children Well
May is for Mother’s and we’ve got lots of wonderful books for moms as well as other gifts to delight her. Take a look at our Gift Guide below and Happy Mother’s Day to all the great moms out there. It’s very often because of you that children learn to cherish books and love reading. And reading leads to enlightenment and understanding, all of which we need a lot more of these days. All of which you’ll find this weekend at the Bay Area Book Fest in Berkeley. (Yes, I know you have to drive across a bridge!)
The Bay Area Book Fest is back in person – this Saturday & Sunday, May 7-8.
From 11am – 5pm each day. Over 200 authors, 100 indoor/outdoor events and 150 exhibitors. And WE’LL BE THERE! Over 40 authors will be signing books at our booth this weekend (booth #90 on Bookstore Boulevard in the Berkeley Civic Center Park along Allston Way). The East Bay may not be our market, but books are, and I feel it’s so very important to support community literary events such as this. Cherilyn Parsons is the mastermind and powerhouse behind this incredible event. Kudos to her.
So come by and see us, lose yourself in the literary world for a few hours. There is something for everyone. I will be moderating The Secrets of Being an Extraordinary Women with three truly extraordinary women writers who have penned amazing books – Lara Bazelon, Mia Kankimaki & Eliza Reid, the First Lady of Iceland – Saturday at 12:30 PM. I’m thrilled to be in conversation with them.
You can check out the whole Book Fest program and buy tickets here: baybookfest.org/2022schedule/
Finally, a quick thank you to the many authors and loyal patrons who joined us for Independent Bookstore Day last weekend. Your support is what sustains us.

A gripping novel about a famous aviatrix and the Hollywood diva who plays her in a movie decades after her disappearance. “Epic and emotional, meticulously researched and gloriously told... a monumental work of art.”

What We're Reading
Bad Actors
Mick Herron
I'm sure you're all tired of my carping on and on about Mick Herron's Slough House series, but I can't avoid it: each one is actually, demonstrably, better than the previous. Honestly, espionage stories are espionage stories, and it is very possible you may detect the machinations as they drop onto the page, but Herron's writing is maturing with each book, getting both denser and funnier. Read this one quickly for the story, but re-read it to savor the layers buried under almost every sentence. A masterpiece. Jeff B.
The Name Of The Wind
Patrick Rothfuss
A modern classic of the high fantasy genre, this book is a true epic with a refreshing and up-to-date voice. Rothfuss shows a stunning command of language and atmosphere. The worldbuilding and magic systems are as intricate as the prose. I loved the structure of the story that blends 3rd and 1st person narration, and the banter in the dialogue is second to none. Matthew KK.
Booth
Karen Joy Fowler
What would it be like if a beloved family member committed a horrible act? Fowler, who reviewed a vast amount of documents from the era, imagines the lives of the Booth family from the viewpoints of the siblings, a family that was both famous and notorious long before John Wilkes entered Ford Theatre on April 14, 1865. Angela K.
The Women I Think About at Night—
Traveling the Paths of My Heroes
Mia Kankimaki
Brilliant and eclectic narrative fiction by a talented Finnish author. A historical look at strong women who have followed their passions and made their own choices. From Karen Blixen to Yayoi Kusama and Sofonisba Anguissola. The “night women” who inspire us. Part history, part biography, part travelogue, I loved this book! Cheryl P.
Dead In The Water
Matthew Campbell & Kit Chellel
One of my two favorite books so far in 2022. I love Dead in the Water for all of the reasons everyone else loves Red Notice. Though not told in the first person [spoiler: the Bill Browder-esque hero of the story doesn't survive], it is, as perennially, the fight of the few against massive, entrenched, corruption. I found myself rushing through it in search of its denouement. Jeff B.
The Palace Papers
Tina Brown
True confessions: I’m a monarchist. Captivated by all the gossip and glamour and what Kate might be wearing. I know. It’s a tad sad. But this is vintage Tina Brown. Rich and ripe, reverent and irreverent. Tina spares no one. She peels back all the layers with clever writing and a wit that is contagious. A great escape into reality behind closed doors at Buckingham Palace. Cheryl P.
Under The Banner Of Heaven
John Krakauer
I revisited this wonderful book because they’re going to release a new miniseries about it soon. The murder of a very young Mormon mom and her 15 month old by her brothers-in-law is such a shocking tale that Krakauer interweaves with the history of the Mormon Church. Not only is this is a fascinating story on its own, but with Krakauer’s masterful writing, it’s a page turner filled with incredibly rich information. Evan A.
If You Want To Write
Brenda Ueland
An enthusiastic and empathetic writing craft book penned by someone who truly loves the work they do! Ueland is extremely aware of all the little tribulations that come with writing creatively. She offers valuable wisdom on how to stay disciplined and connected to your creative spirit in this unaffected and brilliant little book. Matthew K
