December... News, Events and What We are Reading!

Warm & Wonderful Holiday Wishes

It’s starting to look a lot like Christmas… and yes, we have a book for everyone on your list! And if for some unfathomable reason (!) someone doesn’t like to read books, we have many other gifts that you won’t find elsewhere. Special unique gifts. We also have a shelf full of stocking stuffers, wrapping paper, gift bags and tags, and delightful Caspari paper products for your tabletop. Let our personal shopper/booksellers help you find the perfect presents. We wrap and ship for free.

We are also wrapping up our author events for the year, after a special holiday program for kids this Saturday, December 10th at 11 am with children’s book authors, holiday crafts, music and even a visit from Jolly Saint Nick! But – we are already putting together a dynamite line-up of authors for next year – so mark your calendars now for Isabel Allende (January 26th), Susan Griffin (January 29th) and Tappan Wilder with a Thorton Wilder Tribute (February 9).

Meanwhile, thank you again to all of you who have supported us this year. We are eternally grateful.  If you missed my appreciation video, here is the link.

And while “it’s the most wonderful time of the year” in so many ways for many of us, let’s not forget those who are less fortunate. As the great Charles Dickens wrote in A Christmas Carol: “I have always thought of Christmas time… as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them… as if they really were fellow-passengers and not another race of creatures…”

May love, light, peace, harmony and sugar plum fairies dance in your head and your heart!

What's New

Our Newest Recruit

Meet thirteen-year old Azalais Flanders– our newest & youngest recruit at the bookshop.
When she’s not in school or playing soccer, she’s helping wrap gifts this holiday season
and is our resident YA (young adult) specialist.

She’s a whiz at recommending children’s books at any level; and she knows where everything else is in the store as well! She’s writing book reviews for us and next year will be launching a YA book club group.

Equator Coffee

We are delighted to add fabulous Equator Coffee Beans to our selection of grab & go Mercantile essentials!

Holiday Gift Wrap & paper products galore!

It’s starting to look a lot like Christmas! Caspari paper products – cards, napkins, plates, gift wrap & bags have long been a favorite of mine and while we offer Caspari year round, I can’t control myself around the holidays…

Holiday Sparkling Wines

What better way to toast the holidays, family and friends! And one of the loveliest gifts to give… in one of our decorative wine bags. Consider one of my favorite California Sparkling Wines – Domaine Carneros/ Tattinger Brut – and/or a classic French Champagne that is très élégant such as Veuve Clicquot or Perrier Jouet.

What We're Reading

A World Of Curiosities

Louise Penny

The perfect gift for the Inspector Armand Gamache fans on your holiday shopping list. The 18th book in this beloved series by one of my favorite authors, this one does not disappoint. It’s Spring, and the quaint village of Three Pines is emerging from a harsh winter. But not everything buried should come alive again. Not everything lying dormant should reemerge. But something does. Cheryl P.

The Family Remains

Lisa Jewell

This is very interesting. Lisa Jewell has written a stand-alone novel but it’s also a sequel of sorts to The Family Upstairs, her previous novel introducing us to the complex world of Henry and Lucy Lamb and their family. Years after escaping their horrific childhood, we find Henry searching for Finn, their long ago housemate and a teenage Lucy’s teen lover back then. When bones are found connecting them to the house they grew up in, where “it all happened long ago,” the Lamb siblings must once again go on the run before the truth catches up with them. Disturbing and thoughtful and very original, Jewell is such a wonderful British mystery writer whom I highly recommend. Evan A.

Now Is Not the Time to Panic

Kevin Wilson

The story of two teens, one a writer and one an artist, who create a poster for fun and spread it all over town. Things go further than either of them could have imagined when their project goes viral, sparking movements, backlash, and paranoia throughout their town and the world beyond. A classic story of girl meets boy, with a little mass hysteria thrown in. True to form, Wilson spins a strange but enthralling narrative that captures the messiness of friendship, love, and creativity. Matthew K.

Galatea

Madeline Miller

This short story will make a great stocking stuffer for any fan of The Song of Achilles or Circe. In a desperate bid to keep his beautiful masterpiece under his control, Galatea is locked away in an asylum by her obsessive husband constantly monitored by doctors and nurses. An imaginative retelling of Ovid’s Pygmalion. Angela K.

The Prisoner

B. A. Paris

Twist and turns galore, Paris slowly unveils a darker story when a young woman and her new wealthy husband are kidnapped. How well does she really know him? Why isn’t his family paying the ransom? Is he willing to risk her life to save his own? The novel flips between the current day and what has happened in the past focusing on different narrators. It’s very hard to put down because you just need to find out what exactly is going to happen. Evan A.

Divergent

Veronica Roth

The first book in this trilogy – the story of a dystopian future – had me up all night engrossed in its fascinating plot twists. Tris, is a sixteen year old girl who lives in a futuristic Chicago where the human population has dwindled and the government has split people up, not by language, wealth or skin color, but by personality. Tris makes a momentous decision that changes her life to prove to herself and to everyone else that she is more than capable of surviving in a new world. The book is a winning combination of intense, interesting writing that keeps you guessing. I highly recommend this book to avid readers who love being on the edge of their seats on every page. Azalais F.

Endurance

Alfred Lansing

A nonfiction narrative written like a novel, detailing Shackleton's historic Antarctic expedition. A testament to the human capacity to persevere and find compassion under the most brutal conditions (as the title would suggest). Lansing spares no details when describing the hardships of the ill-fated crew, but also places special focus on the camaraderie that thrived between them and the moment-by-moment victories that they encountered on their journey home. Endurance has the beats of a classic adventure story with the larger-than-life figure of Shackleton as its focal point. Enjoy this blisteringly cold book with a hot beverage on standby! Matthew K.

Acquainted with the Night: Insomnia Poems

Lisa Russ Spaar

As a serial insomniac, I found this classic collection fascinating and, ironically (!) reading some of the poems helped me sleep! It was also comforting to learn that I am in good company. There are many famous people, including literary legends who are also insomniacs: Darwin, Franz Kafka, Sylvia Plath, Herman Melville, Charles Dickens, Proust, Emily Bronte. And my favorite Thomas Edison! Maybe why he invented electric light?! All kidding aside, from Nabakov, to Keats, Joyce Carol Oates, Shakespeare and Robert Frost (the title poem) there is a wide range of excellent prose in this small little book that any insomniac would love as a stocking stuffer.    B.

Go-To-Dinners

Ina Garten

So I admit it. I am a Barefoot Contessa junkie. Her cookbooks are addictive (I have all of them.) Mostly because the recipes are so fail-proof, so delicious and so straight forward (as in they aren’t complicated or time-consuming, nor do they require obscure ingredients.) Many of the recipes here were inspired by the pandemic, family meals that can be prepped ahead and require little effort. From overnight Mac & Cheese to Bourbon Chocolate Pecan Pie, this makes a great gift for any busy cook on your holiday shopping list. Cheryl P.
