January 2022... News, Events and What We are Reading
A New Year, A New You,
A New Outlook & New Books
And so we launch into a new year, maybe even a “new you”, which for me always means healthier eating – more greens & hearty soups, less sugar & booze –more fresh air & exercise. It also means a bit of a break after the busy holiday season which allows us to refresh, revive and renew. My new year’s resolution? “Slow down, you move too fast, you got to make the morning last.” Thank you Simon & Garfunkel.
Those of us in retail have been racing to stay ahead of a grim pandemic and it’s economic consequences, working ourselves weary. It’s great to be passionate about your pursuits, but don’t ignore the rest of your life. Don’t try to do everything. Prioritize. Incorporate more ease, more space, more graciousness into your daily life.
The wintery weather helps – even with the sun shining – it is still chill and the days are short. This is simply a slower season that begs for curling up with books, a cup of tea, and quiet evenings at home in front of a fire. It is a time to savor good fortune and to recharge our batteries.
Hopefully the new year also encourages us to conjure a fresh, more positive outlook on life. Yes, we’re still wearing masks (and don’t think that’s going away anytime soon), but rather than dwell on the challenges, let’s focus on the positive and what new opportunities the year offers.
On top of all of this “new” there are also many, much anticipated NEW BOOKS on their way from some of our favorite authors like Isabel Allende, Dean Koontz, Alexander McCall Smith, V.E. Schwab, Jacqueline Winspear, and Kate Quinn. Stay tuned! Meanwhile, best wishes for a healthy and happy 2022.

We’re reading Hamnet
by Maggie O'Farrell
A beautifully crafted novel about William Shakespeare’s family life and the inspiration for his famous play Hamlet.. Fiction? Yes. But who knows or cares? It’s a great story. One of our favorite recently published books, now available in paperback. And yes, it is a love story. On many fronts. {$16.95}

What We're Reading
Bibliolepsy
Gina Apostol
A love letter to the written word and a brilliantly unorthodox look at the rebellion that brought down the Marcos dictatorship in the Phillipines. Meet Primi, a young woman caught between sex, love and escaping into books, as well as a real-world revolution. Funny, sexy and gripping. Cheryl P.
Dream Girl
Laura Lippman
A hit novelist is confined to his bed after a bad fall, and he begins to receive mysterious phone calls from a woman claiming to be his former lover and the inspiration behind his main character. But such a person never existed... or did she? What unfolds is a psychological thriller about stories, set in the past and present of novelist Gerry Anderson. This book is a suspenseful page-turner written for people who love to read, chock full of famous book references and literary asides on every page. Matthew K.The Postmistress of Paris
Small World
Jonathan Evision
A sweeping saga following several families as they flee their own hardships west to California. The Gold Rush, the transcontinental railroad and slavery are only a few of the stories told. Several generations later we meet them again on a fateful railway trip to Oregon. Angela K.
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil
John Berendt
A modern classic in the non-fiction genre, this book presents an enthralling story that centers on the home of a socialite antique dealer and the shooting that occurred there. A captivating tour of Savannah, Georgia, with a southern gothic tone and some truly fantastic characters. Matthew K.
The Rehearsals
Annette Christie
Megan and Scott are finally getting married after almost a decade together. They’ve gathered all their family and friends on a Washington State island for the wedding weekend. But why does Megan have so much tension with the best man, who she’s known since college, just like her future husband? Will Tom’s (awful) pretentious family ever really accept her? When the dreadful day of the rehearsal dinner starts all over again the next morning, Megan and Tom have time and time again to really figure out their next step. Take a break from reality and read this very sweet and funny romantic comedy. The perfect thing to cure any winter blues.

Cajun Justice
James Patterson & Tucker Axum
After Cain Lemaire’s career with the Secret Service got blown out of the water by a scandal, he leaves New Orleans for a new life in Tokyo. Buoyed by the comfort of finally living near his sister again, Lemaire starts working private security for a high profile CEO. Obviously something sinister happens… This book is such a fun ride. I learned more about the yakuza and the philosophy of the samurai and Japanese culture. Go down the “Wikipedia rabbit hole” and discover more about Japan to accompany this really well plotted and engrossing mystery. Evan A.
The Last Cuentista
Donna Barba Higuera
With a comet hurtling through space that will destroy life on earth, 14 year old Petra and her scientist family are a few of the chosen to leave earth to repopulate a far away planet. Petra, who wants to be a story teller like her grandmother, awakens decades later to find that she is the one remaining human to remember earth. In this upper middle grade/YA novel, we follow Petra as she doggedly carries the stories of our past into the future. Angela K.
Nuclear Folly: A History of the Cuban Missile Crisis
Serhii Plokhy
This is not the first book I have read on the subject, but I predict this will be the definitive telling for at least a generation. (I even recommended One Minute to Midnight a few months ago.) Those previous books, however, are Kennedy-centric, almost to the point of hagiography. As a Russian-born professor of Ukrainian Studies, Plokhy has no need to adhere to that narrative, and the result is a book I could not put down.

Minimalista
Shira Gill
Anyone who is nostalgic for a store of the “golden era” of television will love this memoir of the Howard boys and their early life in Hollywood. What is in essence a love letter to their parents, both actors saw the promise of their young children and dedicated their lives to teaching them how to be good people and great actors. With all of the backstories you might imagine, this is a great gift for the television buff in your life. Cheryl P.
