Book Launch Celebration for "Forty Years a Giant – The Life of Horace Stoneham" Author Steve Treder

Author Steve Treder

Author Steve Treder

When New York Giants owner Charles A. Stoneham came home one night in 1918 and told his teenage son, Horace, "Horrie, I bought you a ballclub," he set in motion a family legacy. Horace Stoneham would become one of baseball's greatest figures, an owner who played an essential role in integrating the game, and who was a major force in making our pastime truly national by bringing Major League Baseball to the West Coast.

mail.jpg

Horace Stoneham began his tenure with the Giants in 1924 and assumed control of the team at age thirty in 1936, becoming one of the youngest owners in baseball history. He played a pivotal role in not just his team's history but the game itself.

As the SF Giants head for a pennant win (we hope!), come meet Steve Treder -- the author of this absorbing biography -- and join us for peanuts and Cracker Jacks, as well as a cold brew. (The game that night doesn't start until 7 o'clock ☺️)

Race Matters: Reconciliation, Purpose & Our Local Community

mail.jpg

A community forum hosted by Sausalito Books by the Bay and the Sausalito Woman's Club with a panel of authors and civic leaders including:

·     Artist, activist, & educator Orin Carpenter helping people find their voice through ARTivism

·     Physician-writer, bioethicist, and filmmaker Dr. September Williams (Chasing Mercury)

·     Author Yang-Huang (Why I write in English, My Good Son)

·     Sausalito Mayor Jill Hoffman (chair of Racial Justice Ad Hoc Committee)

Although our area is considered liberal in thought and politics, we are not immune to issues of race, racism and white supremacy. The impact of George Floyd's murder, the Black Lives Matter movement, and the recent rise of Asian hate crimes resonated deeply in our own neighborhoods. How has this impacted our local communities and what role do we play in addressing these critical issues? Our panel of diverse Bay Area agents of change will share their insights and experiences and discuss a path forward. Join the discussion; be part of the change.

This is a free, but ticketed event. You must register in advance.

Books by the Bay Book Club - "A Good Neighborhood" By Therese Anne Fowler

We are finally launching this literary salon that got hijacked by the pandemic last year.

Thanks to all of who have signed up! For those who haven’t, it’s not too late! If you are interested please email me cheryl@sausalitobooksbythebay.com or sign up at the bookshop on your next visit.

The novel is a provocative, powerful read that resonates with many relevant issues today – class, race, the environment – and many timeless issues such as heartrending, young love. Set within a tight-knit North Carolina neighborhood, the book prompts questions that are both timely and riveting. It’s a fast, page-turning read; a compelling story that should make for a great book group discussion. Published in 2019, Newsweek called it “One of the most precise and timely novels of the year”.

The author: Fowler is the New York Times best-selling author of “A Well Behaved Woman” and “Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald” which was adapted for TV.
