July... News, Events and What We are Reading!
Summer Reading
Nothing like sinking your toes into warm sand on a beach and your nose into a good book! Add an ocean view, the crashing surf, a cool drink, a good sunhat and it’s near nirvana for me. Maybe you’re deep in the forest backpacking, reading at dusk by campfire, or maybe you’re just in a shaded hammock in your own back yard. You don’t need to leave town. Reading gives us a place to stay even when we have nowhere to go. You can travel around the world in a book and journey into many different cultures and communities, and never have to deal with long airport lines, security checks and lost luggage. (Mine went missing for FIVE days!) We have curated a collection of our favorite summer “reads” so stop by and check out our recommendations whether you’re staying in town or on your way out. Wherever you are this summer, don’t forget to bring a good book.

It All Comes Down To This
Therese Anne Fowler
The Geller sisters have a difficult task after the not unexpected but sudden death of their mother Marti. Marti has every estate detail in place, including that the summer cottage in Maine be sold and proceeds split three ways. Each daughter – Beck, Claire, and Sophie – are at a very different place in their life. Beck wants desperately wants to keep the cottage; Claire is recently divorced and ambiguous about selling it; and Sophie, Instagram sensation, is in dire need of money to support her lifestyle. As each woman works through her personal crisis, they learn secrets about their mother and each other. A perfect summer read. Angela K.
Counterfeit
Kirstin Chen
What a fabulously entertaining and colorful novel! Kirstin Chen (a Bay Area resident) creates an incredible world of luxury handbags and criminal dealings. During a prolonged maternity leave from her law firm, Ava gets wrapped up in a new world when she runs into her old college roommate Winnie. She hasn’t seen Winnie since she left Stanford freshman year to return to China to avoid a scandal. But Winnie and her life have evolved in a way Ava couldn’t have imagined. And when Winnie offers Ava a way to make money and get out of her rut, she bites at the chance to create something of her own. But what starts as selling some handbags on Ebay and making returns to department stores, turns into a much messier and illegal global scheme that Ava, somewhat wittingly, gets involved in. A fast paced and beautifully descriptive Summer read. Evan A.
Elsewhere
Alexis Schaitkin
In a small remote and secluded town, Vera grows up with fiercely guarded and sometimes brutal traditions and one specific affliction – some mothers just vanish. As Vera and her friends and peer marry and become parents, they speculate who might disappear first. In the tradition of Shirley Jackson and Margaret Atwood, this book will leave you unsettled and yet looking for the next book by this inventive author. Angela K
Remarkably Bright Creatures
Shelby Van Pelt
Once I could hear the voice of Marcellus the Octopus in my head, I was completely enthralled with Van Pelt’s debut novel. She expertly weaves a story of three unique and disparate characters. Tove, a woman in her 70s who cleans the aquarium at night; Marcellus, the wily octopus who is imprisoned there; and Cameron, a young man trying to find his way. Using the three different narrators, a long mystery, evolving over many years, of a missing son is unraveled and all three characters discover a bond they could never have imagined possible. Evan A.
Putin's People:
How the KGB Took Back Russia and
Then Took on the West
Catherine Belton
Finally, two of the books I really enjoyed during the pandemic have been released in paperback. First, as a citizenry, we are always caught up in the crisis of the moment, without understanding the context, or even acknowledging that all politics is a continuum, with no beginning or end. Putin's People is an examination, a dense examination, of the dissolution of the Soviet State, and how the Russian Military/Intelligence behemoth filled that vacuum, anointing Vladimir its pope. Jeff B.
The Case of the Murderous Dr. Cream
Dean Jobb
I have said this before, and will probably say it again, but for all the praise it has garnered, The Devil in the White City is a narrative mess. Even its central figure, H.H. Holmes, was a known quantity. In contrast comes this fascinating study of a relative unknown, a serial killer at the time of Jack the Ripper, operating and evading capture across two continents, while those around him, even those he murdered, trusted the doctor. Jeff B.
