July 2020 Newsletter

2nd Year #9

2nd Year #9

Welcome Back!

Since we re-opened to the public a month ago, it’s been great to see so many of you. A common exclamation: “OMG, browsing in a bookstore again! Can I touch?” (Of course! But you MUST sanitize your hands upon entering or put on gloves!) One patron rejoiced with: “Wow! Books! Eye candy for the brain!”

Thanks to everyone for faithfully adhering to all the pandemic protocols – social distancing, face coverings, et al. So far, everyone is behaving. We have had no issues. But we are carefully monitoring at all times because we are far from free of this health crisis which continues to spiral out of control as this goes to press.

While many people are happy to be able to browse onsite once again, we know many of you are not, which is fine.

She will be leading a riveting discussion with other authors who have recently written about WWII. Discussion topics will include: lesser known historical facts about this pivotal event in world history; the role of the unsung heroes and heroines; theories on how the war really ended. Authors will also offer insights into the bevy of current books on WWII that have emerged since 1995, when archives, secret files and classified information were released. This included information about clandestine intelligence agencies, the unsung roles of women, minorities, and other patriots to the Allied cause whose names we didn’t know –until now. Where You Spend Your Money Now
Makes a Difference

Spend with intent. Main Street USA is fading fast these days. We have long been a community that eschews chain and big box stores, but it’s likely where most of you are shopping today and quite frankly, always have. Our residents have always wanted “boutique, small shop” retail, but if you don’t support them, these small businesses will go away….including your independent community bookstore.

NOW IS THE TIME to patronize the businesses you want to see survive post-pandemic. If you want more than Walmart, Amazon and McDonalds in your future, shop accordingly. Shopping local makes a difference. Seventy cents of every dollar spent locally at an independent store goes back into the local economy.

Now and in the future, our choices add up. Use your money to support the world you want. Be a conscientious shopper.

Libro.FM Audio Books

In these times of quarantine, rather than turning pages, many are turning to audio books. We applaud this as long as it’s not Audible. In case you aren’t aware, Audible is an Amazon product. Libro.FM partners with independent bookstores like ours and shares a percentage of every sale with us. (Amazon hasn’t offered me anything yet!)

So – if you listen to books on Libro.FM, you are helping your local bookshop. Libro.FM Your Independent Bookstore for Audio Books. Thanks in advance!

What We're Reading

Reading in the Time of COVID
Jeff B.

We tend to turn to both literature and history to try to make sense of whatever confounding social predicament in which we find ourselves mired. In the first weeks of the shutdown our customers were requesting The Plague, by Albert Camus, and Love in the Time of Cholera, by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Both of these are essential novels of the previous century, regardless of the context in which they're read.

I have read extensively on the epidemics of the modern era, from ever-present Rabies, to the Black Death of Renaissance Europe, to the "Spanish Flu" of 1918-19, to Ebola and on to SARS. My two favorite titles are:

Flu
by Gina Kolata

A treatise on the 1918 pandemic.

Spillover

by David Quammen

An exploration of the viruses which "spill over" to us from non-human animals.

Mexican Gothic

by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Moreno-Garcia, the author of one of my faves, Gods of Jade and Shadow, brilliantly reimagines of the classic gothic suspense novel, set in an isolated mansion in 1950s Mexico with a stylish socialite heroine. A dark and thrilling, beautifully terrifying book that is next month's pick for the best novel at Independent bookshops.

The Order

by Daniel Silva

This is vintage Silva – absolutely delightful can’t-put-it-down reading. Gabriel Allon, intrepid spy, art restorer and Israeli intelligence officer (i.e. the Mossad) ends up at the Vatican investigating the suspicious death of the Pope. He is also in search of a long-lost book that disputes human history as depicted in nothing less than the New Testament.

Scandinavian Noir: In Pursuit of a Mystery

by Wendy Lesser

Long-time, long-recognized master of Narrative Non-Fiction and Literary Criticism, Wendy Lesser, delves into the forty-year odyssey of Nordic neo-noir as experienced by us Americans. Whether your experience is of the Lisbeth Salander films, the Martin Beck TV movies, or the hopelessly convoluted Harry Hole novels, she continually brings to the fore the context we're missing on our first viewings and / or first reads. And if this description leaves you less than impressed, just know that I was smiling to myself every other page. A fast and fun read!

The Paris Hours
by Alex George

Imagine Paris between the wars. It's a shimmering City of Light alive with famous artists, intellectuals, writers, musicians… but also four ordinary people, secrets and intrigue. A captivating novel, told in the course of a single day in 1927, with a breathless ending.

Love Sometimes
by Barbara Rose Brooker

A novel about risk, Hollywood and controversial love (as in a MUCH younger man) by the author of the Viagra Dairies. The author of 13 books, Barbara is a remarkable 83-year old local writer whose new book is somewhat autobiographical -- chronicling her own tale of Hollywood frustration with ageism, network deception but also personal redemption. Told with humor and honesty with lots of LA vernacular.

American Prophecy: The Fourth Turning

by William Strauss & Neil Howe

A sobering look at what cycles of history tell us about America’s next rendezvous with destiny. Published in 1997, this is a chilling and prophetic read based on today’s reality. Parts are a tad ponderous, but it’s fascinating, well documented information and well worth a look. Why can’t we learn from history?

A is For Musk Ox (picture book)
by Erin Cabatingan

Musk Ox is tired of being in the middle of the alphabet, so he is determined to make it all about him, claiming every letter for himself from Alaska to Yolanda and Zebra. This enjoyable romp through the alphabet will make kids giggle while giving parents and grandparents plenty of laughs also.

Fortunately, The Milk (Middle Grade)
by Neil Gaiman

Neil Gaiman tells wonderful stories, whether for adults or kids. This middle grade book is no exception. Filled with pirates, piranhas, and aliens, adventures and oddities, it is difficult to discern for which audience he is writing.

Lovely War (young adult)
by Julie Berry

In the fractured and dangerous days of World Wars I and II, four gods on Mount Olympus spin the story of Hazel, Hames, Aubrey and Collette. The gods must explain their actions, or face judgment on Mount Olympus. While this book is listed for Young Adults, it should not be overlooked by others.

What's New

What’s black & white
and red all over?

We have daily newspapers again! Many retailers have stopped carrying them, but we will continue to do so. The news is important. Especially today. And yes. You can get it all in on your iPhone. But it doesn’t taste the same with your coffee and croissant every morning. Something about getting that newsprint all over your hands. The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, SF Chronicle & Marin IJ.

She stood in the storm and when the wind did not blow her way, she adjusted her sails.
— Elizabeth Edwards (2010)

Elizabeth Edwards, attorney and former wife of Senator John Edwards, weathered many storms, including the cancer that ultimately took her life. She also wrote two books: Saving Graces: Finding Solace and Strength from Friends and Strangers (2006) and Resilience: Reflections on the Burdens and Gifts of Facing Life’s Adversities (2009).

Her message is as poignant today as it was then. We all need to adjust our sails.
