Summer Beckons
BBQ’s, backyards and beaches are trending. So many great outdoor places to read a book! Who knows, there may even be a road trip in your future? If so, don’t leave home without a good book. Or two! As we emerge from a year and a half of a stifling & scary life-threatening pandemic, that disrupted & curtailed our lives on every front, we want to thank all of you who have supported us through it all. We’re still here! We’re grateful for that and we look forward to seeing you. Please note our new summer hours; we are staying open later! We’re also starting to host “live” in-person events again, and we’re even launching a book club! Details below. Happy Father’s Day to all the great Dads out there, and Congrats to the class of ’21. Upcoming Events
We are migrating back to in-person, live events ON SITE at the bookshop or IRL (In Real Life) as they say on the street. We’re excited about this, but still cautious. You must be vaccinated to attend our indoor events. While the state no longer requires that masks be worn by vaccinated people outside or indoors (after June 15th) we encourage you to do so and to continue to be conscientious about pandemic protocols. Fortunately our shop is well ventilated with open doors and windows and overhead fans. Going forward we envision a combination of virtual and IRL events, as well as some that are a hybrid of both.

Many of you have expressed an interest in a book club, and we were in fact on the verge of launching one last April. We all know why that got scuttled. But now! Now that we can meet again in person, we are excited to announce the launch of our Book Club by the Bay.
• It will be the 2nd Tuesday of every month and we are going to mix it up to keep it interesting and animated and fun.
• We may have the author of the book joining us; there may be other special guests.
• We’ll meet at the bookshop, or maybe on a yacht docked at the marina and/or other fun venues
• We’ll meet at different times to accommodate different schedules.
• There will always be sips and bites (coffee & croissant, tea & cucumber sandies, wine & cheese).
• We will post a reading list and schedule for 3 months at a time to give everyone plenty of time to read and plan accordingly.
• We will read fiction and non-fiction, and we will strive to keep it all affordable and in paperback.
We actually welcome your input on what YOU would like. Nothing is cast in bronze. Other than it will always be the second Tuesday of the month. If you are interested in joining us, please email me cheryl@sausalitobooksbythebay.com or sign up at the bookshop on your next visit!
What We're Reading
Vera
Carol Edgarian
San Francisco, on the eve of the 1906 earthquake. A teenage girl who is the illegitimate daughter of a notorious madam at the city’s most elegant bordello. A fact which few know. This San Francisco author paints a vivid portrait of the era and this cataclysmic event all within a poignant story of tenacious youth, improbable outcomes, heartbreak, devastation, indomitable spirit, renewal and joy. A lush and compelling coming of age tale. Cheryl P.
Great Circle
Maggie Shipstead
In a sweeping saga that moves from the golden age of ocean liners to post war flying, Maggie Shipstead gives us a marvelous story of twins Marian, a daredevil aviator, and Jamie, a gifted and sensitive artist. From Missoula, MT, to war in Europe and the Pacific, we follow their loves and losses with glorious details in an epic story that cannot be put down. Angela K.
That Summer
Jennifer Weiner
There is no single person who has so impacted my life, while remaining so personally invisible, as Mike Nichols. Do you remember: Mother, I want to become a registered nurse.? From the improv of Nichols and May, to Broadway, to films, he was an inescapable presence in American creative culture from 1958 to 1971. Neil Simon lives on in his interpretations, but it is his early cinematic efforts which have seared themselves into my psyche: Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, The Graduate, Catch-22 and, finally, Carnal Knowledge. If possible, I appreciate him even more after reading this. Jeff B.
Circe
Madeline Miller
A story told in beautiful prose from the perspective of a cunning trickster of Greek Mythology. The novel follows Circe the witch, from her naive origins in her father's court, to her role as a powerful sorceress in the events of the Odyssey and beyond. Miller explores themes of empowerment, selflessness, consequence, and the romance of legend vs the darkness of reality. Sometimes challenging, other times purely thrilling and enjoyable. This book is a treat all the way through, with an incredible main character. Matthew K.
Morningside Heights
Joshua Henkin
This poignant novel tells the story of Pru and her romance and then marriage to the young brilliant Shakespeare professor Spence. Their family life with a daughter Sarah and Spence’s son Arlo from an earlier marriage is fraught with the tensions of a blended family and ex-spouse. After three decades of marriage, Spence falls into early on-set dementia and Pru struggles as she becomes his care giver. We also follow Sarah as she becomes a doctor, and Arlo, after several misadventures in employment, becomes wealthy after investing in biotech. Joshua Henkin deftly renders each character with humor and empathy that one feels a part of the family. It will stay with you long after you finish the last page. Angela K.
The Blacktongue Thief
Christopher Buehlman
A fantasy adventure featuring a thief, a knight, and a magician, narrated in the first person by a crook with a knack for vulgarisms. In order to pay off his debts to the sinister Taker's Guild, Kinch Na Shannack tags along on a quest to restore a rightful ruler to her throne. What follows is a sweeping journey across a war-torn world, involving romance, impromptu poetry, mind-boggling surreal magic, and bar fights that would make you want to cover your eyes. The world-building is on point, with each new setting steeped in its own personality and local folk songs. Kinch makes for a strange but engrossing narrator, self-aware, blithe, and eager to get to the juicy parts. Matthew K..
I Am Not a Wolf
Dan Sheehan
A novel about an anthropomorphic wolf disguised as an office worker. If you think that sounds like a crazy premise, get this, it's also a pick-your-path adventure! Each chapter ends with a prompt for which page to turn to based on the direction you want the story to go. You are a wolf who decided to live as a man. Will you find true love? Will you learn the real meaning of success and humanity? Or, will you wind up accidentally mauling a coworker when a lunch meeting gets out of hand? Sheehan spins a hilarious and truly insightful story about the politics and battlegrounds of everyday living. Matthew K.
The Hummingbirds' Gift
Sy Montgomery
From the bestselling author of The Soul of an Octopus comes this slip of a book, that is so small but so huge. You will learn of the astonishing feats of these little winged creatures (they fly backwards, dive at 61 mph, beat their wings more 60 times a second) and the remarkable efforts of our own local hummingbird heroine Brenda Sherburn La Belle who has been rescuing them from peril and rehabilitating them. The shimmering flash and hover of these gorgeous birds will be even more captivating after reading this book. Cheryl P.
Love Is Love
Michael Genhart
By our own local author, this book is a celebration of family that I have long loved since it was first published. A boy tells his friend that he is teased about having two dads, and his friend helps him realize that love is what makes a family. With author notes and questions at the end of the book, this is a perfect way to discuss what truly makes a family. Angela K.
Four Lost Cities: A Secret History of Urban Age
Annalee Newitz
I am constantly amazed by the contributions of Bay Area authors to scholarly discussion, and never more so than by noted Sci-Fi author and unconventional theorist Annalee Newitz's newest. Newitz explores four extraordinary past urban spaces which thrived and then receded, and convincingly argues against the conventional wisdom, parroted by authors I would rather not name, that these were collapses of civilizations. They were not. Urban spaces waxed and waned, eventually to be abandoned, but the peoples and their cultures merely relocated, and did not die. Jeff B.
