The Bookshop Art Gallery
As is our practice and pleasure, we showcase the work of local artists, rotating the work on our “Gallery” wall every month. This month we are showcasing the bright, beautiful canvases of Sausalito artist Gina Quinlan. Mentored in the late 90s by revered Sausalito artist Edith Heath, Gina’s painting style focuses on shape and color. She combines acrylic, ink and gouache in the impasto style with a bright palette reminiscent of summers at the Jersey shore and the sunny hues of the California coastline.
Originally from Philadelphia, Gina settled in Sausalito via London with a career in the finance and music industries. She currently splits her time between placing tech execs at startups and introducing fluorescent pink ink to a fresh white canvas.
For a look at all the local artists we’ve been proud to showcase,
go to Local Artists on our website.

Lady in Ermine
Short Film by Donna DiGuiseppe
In Conversation With Cheryl Popp at the Rafael Theater, San Rafael
Donna DiGiuseppe, Sausalito author of the historical novel Lady in Ermine and Director/Filmmaker of the Special Short of the same name, will be in conversation with Sausalito Books by the Bay owner Cheryl Popp following the film she produced.
The book Lady in Ermine is based on the real life of the most successful, yet relatively unknown, Renaissance woman artist, Sofonisba Anguissola. Michelangelo recognized her genius; Vasari praised her talent. Sofi, as she was called, was immersed in the courtesan worlds of the Spanish and Medici courts, capturing history on canvas, and defying the conventions of her time.
The film portrays the moment Sofi realizes her calling for portraiture and envisions the masterpiece she will render, one day, capturing the soul of Philip II of Spain, the foreign ruler who invaded her country.

What's New
What Were Reading
The House In The Pines
By Ana Reyes
Maya was a teen when her best friend died, she dropped dead in front of her. Now years later, Maya sees that another woman has died under similar circumstances, and standing in front of the same man from all those years ago. The House in the Pines is a fascinating story that touches on how well one can trust their own memory and if Maya can trust herself. I couldn’t stop reading it, as Reyes volleys between Maya’s past and present and the story slowly unravels until we learn the truth. Evan A.
Mad Honey
By Jodi Picoult and Jennifer Finney Boylan
This book is a tour de force collaboration by two authors following two different narrators. In one storyline, Olivia is a beekeeper struggling to support her son as he is tried for the murder of his girlfriend, Lily. The other narrative follows Lily, delving into her past and detailing her move to a new town and budding relationship with Asher. The story confronts difficult issues of abuse, healing, and gender identity through themes of new beginnings, love, empathy, and resilience. The vivid, fierce characters and the layered connections between them stood out to me as some of the novel's biggest strengths (of which there are many). Captivating. Matthew K.
Meanwhile
By Jason Shiga
A middle-grade graphic novel that explains the concept of entropy. Meanwhile is a pick-your-path book featuring dozens of possible endings. Some are strange, some are silly, and only one or two reveal the underlying existential truth of the plot as a whole. The book received praise for innovative storytelling at the time of its release and now has a successor/follow-up title in Shiga's Adventuregame Comics: Leviathan. Matthew K.
Waco: David Koresh, the Branch Davidians, and a Legacy of Rage
By Jeff Guinn
Whatever your political bent, it has to be admitted that the torching of the Branch Davidians' Mount Carmel compound was a tragedy of Rodney King proportions. Were they an armed Cult which needed to be extinguished? Did the Federal and Local Government overreach? Either way, the stage was set for all that has followed for the last 30 years, including Trump's presidency. Both of these books are important and, read together, even more so. Jeff B.
Kitten with a Whip / Kiss Her Goodbye
(Two novels)
By Wade Miller
Between about 1947 and 1963, thousands of titles were published as "quickies," existing, supposedly, only as titillation. Quite a few dozen of these, however, were written by exemplars of their age, much as Dashiell Hammett twenty years previously. The best of these are excursions not only into our past, but into the minds of producers and directors who wanted to capture the seamier side of The Greatest Generation on film, and which survive as one of America's greatest cultural legacies: film noir. Jeff B.
