Welcome to the Banned Books Scavenger Hunt!
Every year the American Library Association publishes a list of books that were challenged by people and organizations who wanted those books banned from schools and libraries. This year, independent bookstores throughout California who are members of the California Independent Bookstore Association (CALIBA) challenge you to a Banned Books Week contest! Anyone who answers all challenges correctly will be entered to win a drawing for a $100 gift card from their favorite participating California independent bookstore. Some bookstores are doing this challenge on Instagram, others through their web sites, and some are doing both!
So, ready for the challenge from the team at Sausalito Books by The Bay? Below is an excerpt from a book that was challenged somewhere in America. Your challenge is to name the book and share why you think it should NOT be banned. After you respond to this challenge you'll find a list at the bottom of this page with links to all the other participating stores. So, ready for the challenge from the team at Sausalito Books by The Bay?
Challenge #1:
“If I was bright, if I was even a little bit smart, I'd have my own little place, an' I'd be bringin' in my own crops, 'stead of doin' all the work and not getting what comes up outa the ground.”
Challenge #2:
"Why did the police shoot that man?” "Can police go to jail?"
